Having a dog moving around in a moving car is not safe for the dog or the driver. Here are a few tips for containing your furry friend to make the trip enjoyable for all concerned.
1. If your pup is crate trained, using a sturdy crate in the back seat is a secure way to travel with your pup. Crate trained pups often see the crate as a safe place. Using the crate in this instance can help your pup feel safe and alleviate anxious behavior.
2. If your pup is not crate trained the crate can have a negative effect on your pup. The crate may make him anxious. A good alternative is a dog seat belt. a harness designed to attach to the seatbelt. be sure the harness fits well and is comfortable for your pup.
3. For smaller dogs you may want to consider a booster seat. With a booster seat your pup can watch out the window without being in the most dangerous position in the car . . . your lap. The booster seat should have access for a dog seatbelt.
4. The best place for your pup is the rear seat. Even though you may want your friend beside you, this can be very distracting for the driver. With your pup in the rear seat you minimize distractions and reduce the risk of injury.
Keep your car tidy to reduce the likelihood of loose items becoming projectiles in an accident.
